Stitching Clamp

Been searching for a while for a stitching clamp. Finally came across someone in France, a craftsman who specialise in making tools mainly for leather works.

And, have to say, this is probably one of the finest piece of stitching clamp that we have came across. Beautiful workmanship, loves how the curved hinge is done. Wholly crafted from a single piece of French wood which mainly used for wooden tools.

Initially, was thinking not to wrap the clamp mouth, as everyone here loves the grains around the tip of the mouth, but, there's just not enough friction to hold the item or it'll leaves a clamp mark if were to clamped a little too tight… Thus we were left with no choice but to wrap it, although we felt it deserve a little more than just a piece of raw hide.

  1. So where did you get this from and how much did you pay for it?

    1. I think you can get it from Jerome. I am not sure if he is the same craftman in the post but the clamp I order from him looks exactly this. And the quality is absolutely superb!

It will cost around 80euros depending on the design plus postage.

    2. Oh, I forgot to leave his email address: jerome.david569@orange.fr
Here's the French forum where I found him. It's all in French though. Opening it with Chrome can help with the translation.

  2. Hi I think I found the same guy who made yours. :) I'm wondering whether I should wrap the tips up. Found your post to be very useful. Beautiful work. Did you glue the leather piece on the tips?

    1. Hi Carmen, your messages just suddenly all pops up on our email... Weird. We must have missed your question back in Dec. Anyway, yes, its the same person whom we purchased the clamps from. Glade you found him. As for wrapping the tip, its actually up to individual. As we find the edge of the wood can be quite sharp thus creates a crease line on our work, thus, the wrap would help to soften that. Just be sure to use something not too thick, make it longer, thin the edges, so as to minimize the chances of the thread getting caught on it while you sew. Happy stitching! Cheers

  3. Just stumbled upon this old thread. For anyone interested, Rocky Mountain Leather Supply sells these stitching clams. They are beautiful. They sell one that he makes that has some increased ergonomics with a concave curve for more comfort on the part that rests against your leg and then a little wing to apply increased downward pressure on the top clam jaw. Mine took a little sanding and tweaking to get it more comfortable, but I must say that it is now very very good.
Hope that helps someone! Happy stitching!
